MATT KERR

PILOT

FLIGHT HOURS: 3100+

Aviation runs in Matt Kerr’s blood. While his love of aircraft started with watching his Dad run a Piper Cub BPA up and down the South Island’s West Coast, fixed wings ultimately lost out to helicopters.

Matt, who’s also a qualified electrician, joined our Southern Heli Lift team in 2020 as a contract specialist agricultural pilot flying our Hughes 500.

Matt’s training ground was Canterbury, where he worked initially as a loader driver, before moving on to get his helicopter ag rating.

With a total of 3100 flying hours clocked up during his career, two thirds of Matt’s time has been spent dedicated to agricultural aviation.

SEEDING YOUNG AVIATION BLOOD: Matt's father and uncle in the
Kaipo Valley during the late 80s.

What appeals most about agricultural aviation?

Extended lunches waiting for the weather to clear. Seriously, though, ag clients are great people to work with, and I really enjoy the pride and satisfaction that comes from doing the job well.

What does your role at Southern Heli Lift involve?

Piloting the Hughes 500D, and providing timely and excellent service to our clients.

What drew you to fly with the Southern Heli Lift team?

The chance to work with a good team, as well as the good gear and clients Southern Heli Lift has. They’re a fun crew, and there’s a good variety of work, too.

What keeps you busy outside the cockpit?

Taking care of the family. Deer hunting. Chores.
